On the 9th of November (Manila time), the heftiest jackpot so far for 2022 at a global level had only one winning ticket on record. Powerball’s total jackpot winning reached a whopping USD 2.04 billion or about Php 11,850,360,000,000.

This comes after several straight months of having no winner for the Powerball draw. The winning numbers, 10-33-41-47-56 and the Powerball was 10 finally matched just one ticket to win the multi-billion jackpot prize. The odds to win were a mind-blowing 1 in 292.2 million as stated by the Multi-State Lottery Association.

Lottery officials are also encouraging lottery players to check their tickets for the smaller prizes which are still considerably substantial. Multi-State Lottery Association revealed that more than 11.2 million tickets won cash prizes that total $ 98.1 million among which were 22 tickets that won $ 1 million prizes for matching the five white numbers but not the Powerball.

There were three other big winners in California on Tuesday, matching five of the winning Powerball numbers for a $1.15-million prize. Those tickets were sold at Stues Dairy in Gardena, Oak Valley 76 in Beaumont and 1001 Castro Street Market in San Francisco.

First payout: USD 1 million to the winning ticket seller: Grandpa Joe

The first Powerball check for USD 1,000,000 went to Joseph Chahayed, owner of Joe’s Service Center in Altadena, California. Lottery officials immediately went to his store at 5:45 a.m. with the news that he’ll be receiving the USD 1 million check as a bonus for selling the USD 2.04-billion jackpot-winning ticket. The USD 2.04 billion winning tickets was sold at his gas station. This is also California’s first known billion-dollar-level jackpot Powerball winner.

The media gathered around Chahayed’s gas station as the lone lucky winner still yet to surface to claim his winnings. Chahayed also expressed that the winner comes from the neighbourhood. The 75-year-old owner of Joe’s Service Center — now an ExxonMobil franchise — says he plans to share his winning with his 11 grandchildren and the rest of his family.

“I’m happy for California; I’m happy for L.A.,” Chahayed said. “I’m more happy for Altadena. There are a lot of poor people here; they deserve it.”

Danny Chahayed, Joe’s son, was interviewed by the media and also helped run the 20-year-old, family-owned-and-operated business, he revealed more about his pops, “He loves people. He just loves interacting with people on a daily basis. I’m hoping the person who won is actually from the community, so that way they know the struggles of the people around here and they can give back,” Danny Chahayed said, echoing his father’s sentiments.

Lottery officials also noted that California’s schools will receive $156.3 million from the jackpot, which is the highest contribution from a single roll in California Lottery history, officials said.

There was a slight delay Monday evening for the scheduled drawing of Powerball. It was postponed for 10 hours when another state overstepped a security issue when they announced the winning numbers just before 6 a.m. Pacific time, Tuesday. Officials didn’t digress on the details of the security issue that delayed the drawing or where it happened.

Moving forward, by 10 a.m., California officials were able to confirm that there was one winning ticket bought at Joe’s Service Center which matched all six Powerball numbers.

Greg Parashak, California Lottery spokesperson, shared that the jackpot’s cash value comes in just below USD 1 billion, which is USD 997.6 million. He said, “It’s a lot of money. I would imagine this person’s going to take their time [coming forward].”

Tuesday’s jackpot was hit on the 41st draw of the run, marking the sixth time the Powerball jackpot was hit in 2022. The last Powerball jackpot was won on August 3 in Pennsylvania.

Breathtaking. That’s one word that could describe how Powerball’s latest events have been. It really shows that no matter what the odds are, there is still that one chance that your beloved numbers can match the winning results. It also shows how random the lottery really is. Seeing this news makes me want to head out right away and get a ticket in with the PCSO’s 6/58 lotto. There’s no winner yet and the total jackpot now totals PHP200 million plus.
