Manila, Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) confirms that the recent hired on the spot (HOTS) during the ‘Trabaho, Turismo, Asenso: Philippine Tourism Job Fair’ in Cebu City has 332 successful applicants finding stable jobs in the Tourism arena.

Highlighting the good news was that more than 20 of the successful hires were senior high school graduates as announced by DOLE-7 (Central Visayas) officer-in-charge Lilia Estillore.
The jobs that were covered were new dealers, stock clerks, cashiers, service crew and customer service representatives.
Estillore adds, “The positive turnout of the first-ever Trabaho, Turismo, Asenso: Philippine Tourism Job Fair conducted last week at SM City Cebu showed that the Tourism Industry in Region 7 is revived and is now welcoming back more applicants to complement the workforce it needs.”
Among NUSTAR Resort and Casino’s new hires, Jonalyn Terante of Moalboal, Cebu, coming in as a fresh graduate with no work experience, is now a dealer at Nustar Resort and Casino.
The most in-demand jobs in the fair were ESL (English as Second Language) teachers, cashiers, new dealers, customer service representatives, sales staff, service crew, office staff, customer assistants, stock clerks and baggers.
NUSTAR Resort and Casino is among the top participating employers that hired the most applicants. Among the companies who also provided job positions were:
- QQ English
- Rulls Cellphones and Accessories Inc.
- SM Savemore
- Azpired Inc.
- SM Supermarket
- SM Store
- Supervalue Inc.
- McDonald’s Philippines
- SM Appliance
The DOLE job fair is a timely event that not only spells progress and opportunities but will also act as the much-needed spark to start economic development in the region. Emerging industries not only encompass the expected commercial establishments but also notably include a new player, NUSTAR, in the casino resort roster.
Estillore looks forward to and is thankful for the very active and enthusiastic participation of both applicant and employer in the event. “We are grateful to all participating employers, especially to those who hired applicants on the spot. We are hoping for more employers joining in our upcoming job fairs and for more applicants, who will be given the opportunity to land a decent job in addition to the new HOTS,”

So far, the statistics on successful registrants as compared to those qualified were considerably a small margin of difference. Of the 1,830 jobseekers, those qualified were 1,232. This draws much learning and insight as to how DOLE will be addressing its programs and events moving forward.
The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) also recommended about 100 individuals for further skills training and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) also welcomed about 18 candidates for business opportunities.
Those who didn’t quite make it, around 182 applicants, are noted as Near hires and Estillore has expressed encouragement for them. These numbers are also indicative of how HOTS participants will increase in the forthcoming events. This a hopeful sign that DOLE will be able to have bigger and better results in the coming months ahead. Especially, with the pandemic restrictions being less restrictive for the nation.
To clarify, the “Near Hires” are already jobseekers considered hired. They just lack additional documents or requirements that will be monitored by DOLE. This is in partnership with the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) – Cebu City’s Department of Manpower Development and Placement (DMDP).
The ‘Trabaho, Turismo, Asenso: Philippine Tourism Job Fair’ was also held simultaneously in Metro Manila and Davao City. This was from September 22 to 23, 2022. Important numbers to consider are that over 9,000 jobseekers took advantage of the 8,310 employment opportunities offered in the three-day initial leg of the “Trabaho, Turismo, Asenso!” Philippine Tourism Job Fair in Pasay, Cebu, and Davao.
There were 407 applicants assured of immediate employment, while 8,376 others were considered as near-hires, DOLE said, as it emphasized the need to bridge jobseekers with the human resource requirements of the recovering tourism industry.
DOLE also noted the very honourable participation of 157 employers which brought with them 8,310 jobs. The job fairs will continue and conclude on May 2023.
Casino resorts truly bring with them jobs as well as a promising business environment to their immediate area. I consider NUSTAR as an important player in providing further employment and a faster-paced recovery of Cebu as it steps out of the pandemic.
