The 2023 Chairman’s Charity Cup held at Camp John Hay Golf Club (CJH) saw Tony Fernandez fire up an impressive 40 points under the Stableford format to grab the overall championship. The player who got close to Fernandez’s stats was Steve Paatan who scored 43 while the close third followed at a total of 45 by Nestor Fangwan completing the winners’ circle for the prestigious charity sports event. 

The Stableford scoring system with full January handicap will be used for members (maximum HDCP of 27) while the guests vied for top honours under the Molave scoring format.

The latest tourney was in honour of the Club Chairman Robert John Sobrepeña who was also among the players who competed. There were nearly 200 players in the 18-hole event that was spread over two days at the globally renowned Baguio golf course. The awards rites were held on Sunday at the  CJH Golf Club Verandah.

The other top players were Thirdy Escaño who clocked in 61 under the Systems 36 format to claim the sponsor’s division crown over Paulo Saycon (66) and Christian Villareal (67).

Meanwhile, the division champions of the two-day event, sponsored by The Manor and Forest Lodge at Camp John Hay and Le Chef, were Moon Wan Sang (Seniors 1), Panopio Raymundo (Seniors 2), Oh Kyung Ja (Ladies 1), Jung Soon Jung (Ladies 2) and Steven Karl Gengos (Dependents).

Last year’s overall crown was Lee Byung Sun, a 10-handicapper, netting an extraordinary 38 net points. Among which were 2022’s event winners were Mars Garcia (Class A), Jeong Sek Jun (Class B), Eric Acuña (Class C), Ben Ayoong (Class D), Dina Eden (ladies category) and Thirdy Escaño (guest division).

Championship categories and honours for the Chairman’s Cup at Camp John Hay were the overall championship and the low gross honours with competition also expected to be keen in the other categories, including Class A (0-9), Class B (10-15), Class C (16-19), Class D (20-above).

Among the major prizes was a Texas Eagle electric golf car, courtesy of the Turf Company as a  hole-in-one prize on No. 4.

The tournament was presented by Warbird Security and Investigation Agency and Golforce, Inc. and sponsored by American Eye Center, The Manor at Camp John Hay and Le Chef.
